Taumata Council
The Taumata Council consists of Kaumatua and Kuia of Te Uri o Hau who are appointed because of their mana, knowledge and leadership recognised by the people of their marae.
The vision of the Taumata is to Promote and sustain te mana me ona Tikanga o Te Uri o Hau and its mission statement is to educate and empower the well-being and future of Te Uri o Hau.
The Taumata is responsible for;
• All matters relating to Tikanga,
• The organisation of traditional marae activities and marae development,
• The development and maintenance of regular communication with Te Uri o Hau and other Maori
• Determining disputes as to who is Te Uri o Hau and to which Te Uri o Hau ancestral marae they belong
The Taumata Council promotes awareness of Te Uri o Hau cultural issues and concerns. They are also responsible for communication with other organisations including government departments.
The proceedings of the Taumata Council are open to all Te Uri o Hau.
Activities that the Taumata have covered this year
- Travelled to Wellington in support of Trustees for carbon credit signing with 5 iwi
- Support Hanerau Farm with the Ahu Whenua Trophy in Taupo
- Support the Cultural Heritage Trail proposal
- Support the appointment of Mikaera Miru as Kai Arahi for the Cultural Heritage Trail
- Support beneficiary Virginia' Doctrate Graduation at the Bruce Mason Centre, Takapuna
- Taumata Cultural Heritage Focus Group meeting with North Power re: Transmission line
- Integrated Kaipara Harbour Management Governance hui at Oruawharo marae. This was attended by Rodney District Council's mayor, council members and staff, Kaipara District Council Chief Executive Officer, Northland Regional Council Chairman and staff, Te Puni Kokiri, Winstone, Fonterra and many others
