Te Uri o Hau is a Northland hapu or sub tribe of Ngati Whatua and descends from the ancestor Haumoewaarangi through Hakiputatomuri.
The tribe has approximately 7,000 members, with most of its beneficiaries living in either Auckland or close to their ancestral lands in the Northern Kaipara region.
The tribal groups of Te Uri o Hau include Ngai Tahuhu, Ngati Tahinga, Ngati Rangi, Ngati Mauku, Ngati Kauae, Ngati Kai Whare and Ngati Kura.
Te Uri o Hau settled its historical grievances with the Crown in 2002. Since then the tribe has been developing commercial partnerships in order to maximize the return to beneficiaries for a self sufficient, sustainable and prosperous future for all tribal members.
As part of the settlement Te Uri o Hau developed an organizational structure to reflect the desire of beneficiaries, both young and old, to have a say in all aspects of tribal development.
Today beneficiaries are actively involved in all aspects of the tribe's development from the boardroom to the whenua (land) working constructively for the best interests of Te Uri o Hau.
